Free Dirt: Now available!

Despite what you might be thinking, this is not an advertisement for some no-cost lawncare material. It’s the clever name for Jay Wilkinson’s latest solo show, which continues his trend of producing exceptional, intricately painted works that are interlaced with whimsy and irreverence. The show very effectively captures Jay’s artistic talent and his unique vision simultaneously, traits that have clearly resonated within the art community and with collectors, making him a beloved figure in the city’s art scene. “Free Dirt” explores a wide variety of colors, textures, themes and characters, but feels uniquely “Jay” at every turn.

Whether you’re a longtime admirer of Jay Wilkinson’s work, or just discovering his artistry, his contributions to Fort Worth’s art scene are undoubtedly something to be celebrated, and his paintings demand that you view them up close, and often, from more than one angle.  His art has long been coveted for their precision and exactness, and appreciated for their near perfect replication of the photographic memories that are typically his inspiration. But it’s the artist’s quirkiness, and his willingness to lead with that quirkiness, that really draws people in.

For example, in one of Wilkinson’s pieces, you might catch a glimpse of Grimace, an old school McDonald’s mascot floating around the edges of an otherwise unrelated image. In another, a perfectly painted facsimile of actor Jack Nicholson, which itself has been made to look like it was a clipping cut out of a magazine, is chomping on a mouth-watering summer treat of watermelon.  On an adjoining wall, there is a classic example of Jay’s photorealistic painting style that has been overlaid with a random flourish of bright pink spray paint, as if the artist ‘tagged’ his own finished work!

Jay’s exhibition promises to take you along with him on a thought-provoking and immersive journey through his unique artistic vision, where you will, like him, uncover the hidden beauty in the mundane.  Don’t miss out on the chance to witness this captivating collection of paintings through Wilkinson’s incredible solo show, “Free Dirt”.
